Supporting Employee's Mental Well-Being

An employee is the most valuable living asset to a company. Consider a business as a living being.The employees are the organs that sustain and make up a healthy business.

It is, therefore, important to keep every organ’s health in check for long sustenance of the body. All this is taken care of by what is at the top - the 'head'. It is important to provide adequate support services to employees to benefit from counselling and other interventions to ensure positive mental health. Timely intervention on the part of the employer, organization and coworkers can prevent a lot of potential damage at individual and organizational level.

Here are a few ways you can ensure the mental wellness of your employees.

1. Healthy communication

Empathetic approach to communication is the key. Clear communication goes a long way in supporting the mental well-being of the employees.

Those who are at the top of the hierarchy should take regular initiatives to maintain consistency in communication regarding mental health. Reassurance should be given to the workforce regarding mental health measures and the resources available at company's disposal. Interactive sessions with expert psychologists, stress busting games, and yoga sessions are some of the few ways to engage with the employees. The best part is that these can be easily arranged virtually.

The issues that are presently bugging the employees won't disappear once the pandemic ends, yet this could be an opportunity to include the aspect of mental health in all the future policies too.

2. Understand your employee

3. Leading by example

Let us take an example. During a VC an employee's kid appears with a toy on the screen and this possibly embarrasses him/her. A good manager would immediately laugh it out and reassure the employee that this is not a big deal. The key here is to take into account the vulnerability of human beings and to accept it as it is.

Other than that regular 1 one 1 discussions with your team, listening and engaging with them, and practicing patience demonstrates the manager's concern and care for his/her employees.

It should be ensured that employees have access to treatment for mental health problems where needed. This could be assessed on a periodical basis through workplace stress related surveys. Also, while doing all this do not forget about how the head itself ought to be in perfect health to manage the body. Talk about your feelings, stay active, pursue your hobby, and the most important, immediately reach out for help when in need.

Finally, it is important to be aware of the fact that there is no one-size-fits-all measure to create a mentally healthy environment because every workplace is different - from the people who are involved in the work, to the work that needs to be done, to the leaders running the organization, the size of the organization, the external environment that influences the community, and the external resources the company draws. All of these factors play an important role in shaping the mental health of the employees.
